Ethan Hutt is an Associate Professor and Gary Stuck Faculty Scholar in Education at the University of North Carolina – Chapel. For more than a decade, Dr. Hutt has researched the historical development, present use, and future possibilities for the tools we use to describe and evaluate the work of schools. This research has included studies on grading and standardized testing as well as measures of teacher quality, attendance, school performance, and public accountability. He recently co-authored the book Off the Mark: How Grades, Ratings, and Rankings Undermine Learning (but Don’t Have to) (Harvard University Press, 2023) and his work has been published in a wide range of scholarly and mainstream outlets including Educational Researcher, Journal of Teacher Education, Educational Policy, the New York Times, and Washington Post.
